Forget new year resolutions. Conduct a past year review instead

· Himanshu Gupta

“What is your 2024 resolution?” — “Yar, health pe dhyaan dena hai.” (I want to focus on my health.) One of the most common answers I hear over New Year socials.

The sad news: goal setting doesn’t work that way. High chances you won’t even remember your resolution after two months. Year-end reviews are more informed, valuable and actionable than half-blindly looking forward with broad resolutions.

What is an end-of-year review? Reflect on the year gone by and plan ahead.

Why do it? To live a conscious life by setting up habits and systems towards achieving your goals and life mission.

How? Everyone thinks differently. Here are methods from high-performing people — pick one that suits you, or mix them:

  • Annual review — James Clear
  • The yearly review template — Dickie Bush
  • Goal-setting guide — Sahil Bloom
  • Past-year review — Tim Ferriss

You may not finish in a day. That’s fine — take some time every day for a few days. It helps the reflection process: go back in time, check your calendar, your photos, your notes. Good luck!
